Is the World Getting Better or Worse? A Look at the Numbers

Once in a while you come across a message, a person, or a book that stands out from the rest. During a time when mainstream media continue to pile on negative and divisive stories in their desperate attempt to grab attention, a balanced and fact-based message such as that of Steven Pinker is noteworthy.

Cognitive scientist Steven Pinker, in his bestseller “Enlightenment Now: The Case for Reason, Science, Humanism, and Progress”, presents a scientifically woven message on some of the most formidable global trends and threats today. At a time when we are continuously alerted to challenges, crises and innumerable failures of human kind by all sorts of experts and talking heads, Pinker’s message arrives like a breath of fresh air.

He asks his readers to take a step back from the negative psychological influences circulated in the press. Instead, he invites us to shift our focus to facts and science, to apply reason in our thinking rather than ideological bias, as a way to a happier and freer life for all.

The answers are found in the data, the factual statistics – some 75 graphs provided in his book. If anything, these graphs offer an excellent starting point for challenging and reevaluating some of the “common wisdom” religiously recited on mainstream platforms 24-7. We strongly recommend taking the time to read the book.

We are convinced that, if we are serious about truly addressing and solving the problems of our time, Pinker’s message can install a more balanced and truth-based perspective in all of us.

If you don’t have the time, or if you can’t muster the motivation to read the book, listen to Pinker’s Ted Talk linked below. These 18 minutes will certainly be well-invested.
